    This made me cry, Cas. The part that you explain how you felt, before diagnosed, how you were treated and the way you treated yourself hits close to home. I want to tell you I have the same experience. I also have ADHD big-time and I also was very hard on myself for this. I still struggle sometimes but it’s gotten a lot easier having you and Dawn and in my life❤ I had started with Marie Kondo and was already decluttering when you came into my life. I’m a mother of three girls of which two also have ADHD. So it can really get crazy at our house🤪 the steps you explain are very valuable for everybody, but especially for people with the ADHD. Once again thank you! And I love your personality!😊

    Thank you for the huge pep talk! I pre-treated where the cat threw up a hairball on my bed and put that in the washer. I bought a jar of green olives, as soon as I opened them up, they were mush, but they were from a store that’s a hour away so I dumped them in the garbage and rinsed the jar and put it in the recycling bin Still working. You are a great motivator!❤❤❤

    I am pretty sure that I have adhd or something similar. I really struggle to get anything done before midday... I am kept awake most nights by chronic pain and other symptoms of chronic health challenges. I sleep from 4am or 6am, whenever my pain settles down, until 11am or midday then it takes at least an hour for me to wake my brain up enough to do anything. I am active from 2pm until 6pm then nap for an hour or two. Then I'm back up to cook dinner and get stuff done until 2am. Then I start to get more pain so I slowly potter around the house getting ready for my sleep...i am diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, recovering from being bed bound, so I have learnt that unless I stick to the timetable I've outlined above I end up creating a flare up of all my chronic conditions because one flareup of pain/fatigue will lead to a spiral down into being bed bound very quickly. I say all this to emphasise the point that we must adapt what we do to our individual capacity....

    My mother was a professional housekeeper. What you have described is what she called a "1 2 3" meaning what you do in a bind to make your home appear presentable, when there is not enough time to do an actual cleaning. However, if that approach is all that is ever done, in time, the house will begin to look dull. It is all in priorities. Thanks for sharing your method. Have a good day.

    I apply Dana K White's container concept to time, and apply it to both "frogs & ice cream". So every day I do these 2 frogs: 15 minutes of daily morning chores and 15 minutes of daily evening chores. I enjoy sewing and knitting, they are my ice cream. Knitting involves counting, so that daily minimum dish of ice cream is off the clock and X number of rows (about a morning news program worth). Sewing is a mininimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 90 minutes a day. With that I always know where I am in the current flow of creating my me-made wardrobe. We invite company over (ice cream) to give us a deadline for our big monthly chores (frogs). Cas, you have inspired a lot of this---remember your old "dirty thirty?" That would be a great idea to review in a podcast! Thanks! ❤

    My sister blew up a vacuum when we were kids and I used to roll over the cord all the time which makes it self move. Maybe nowadays with cordless vacuums you can give that roll to a kid but because of that experience my sister doesn’t vacuum at all. She’s 32 in sept. She doesn’t own one and never will. It scarred her for life. I also own a roomba and idk if it’s the best fix. It runs into everything, damaging the furniture and when I decide to use it I have to pick up everything on the floor which because I have pets means there are a million toys scattered all over the place that could get caught in the roomba. A lot of their furniture it also so light weight that the roomba just pushes it around the room so I have to pick that up too. I thought it was the fix to me being lazy but it might actually be easier just using a regular vacuum

    When I’m cleaning my house and I’m in the zone I’ll get so fixated that I won’t drink, eat, answer my phone or even pee. I think that because of this I can clean a lot quicker than most. Maybe you’re the same, your focus tidying and not stopping for a chat etc. Also I like to think of my to do list as a I GOT IT DONE list, it’s where I go to get the satisfaction of being able to tick. I have a long list of jobs, I’ll do them all tick them off as I go, when I’m feeling rubbish about myself I’ll look at my list and remind myself of how well I’ve done. Once the entire list is done I untick them and repeat the jobs and tick again. Happy cycle

    Anyone that complains about not having a Roomba, I've seen places that have good quality robot vacuums for a decent price. Even Five Below in the $5+ has a robot vacuum that's $20. (I've bought one and it's not the best, but it gets the job done to be good enough to move on.)

    My home is mostly ok. So I allow myself to just hang out with you on the couch with a blanket☺. I'm still in my pyjama and it's 9:15 pm😂😂😂😂. I did some paper stuff today which bothered me for weeks. And I'm gonna time washing my dishes and the table (ok it took 11minutes to clean the dishes, 4 to dry and put them away and 1 to clean and dry the surface-> total 16min😉😅and I'm listening to "Happy ever after" by Abby Jimenez, just in case someone needs some romance doing chores) and now I'm taking a bath. Tomorrow is laundry day (I have access to the washing machine once a week) and the laundry is already sorted and ready (there are at least 5 loads🙄😅).

    I have a visual board I log into each day. One note on it says "Perfect is the enemy of good." I do the dishes and laundry every day, and tidy about 5 mins (this is perfect for before bed as screen free time). Then throughout the week I clean for about two-20 min sessions. The house is just going to get dirty again, so perfection is incredibly unnecessary. Functional and hygienic is necessary.

    Cas, I find you so inspirational and I love the way you keep it real. I always listen to you while I'm cleaning. I'm a single mom to a 15 year old boy, I work 48 hours a week. Work starts at 4 am. and all the responsibilities of home fall on me. To say I'm exhausted is an understatement. I'm definitely guilty of comparing myself to others and beating myself up because other women work and keep a clean house, why can't I? Last month I rented a very large dumpster and cleaned out my garage and 2 sheds. Today, I did a little trash bag therapy and filled 2 trash bags. My house still is not perfect by any means but I'm making progress in baby steps and I owe it all to you! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

      Cas is awesome for giving us the knowledge, the ideas, techniques and tools to be able to help ourselves.... Just remember you were the one who worked their butt off making progress on your goals. You were the one who wanted the change, found out what/how to do and then did it! It feels great to be able to use the tools and ideas from Cas and others to make a difference in your life doesn't it! Progress and momentum! Give yourself grace for finishing your goals, you can get there! It's OK to celebrate the things others may see as small, what matters is you made progress on something you wanted/needed to do. If it makes a difference, even just 1% better, then it's important. After all big changes are just many little changes combined. Blessings from South Eastern Australia, Dot

    I need HELP. We recently listed our home. Before that, we declutter and even moved many things into storage. Any time someone wanted to view the house, my whole family would have to spend HOURS, I do mean HOURS cleaning up again even if we had just cleaned 2 days ago. This is the cleanest we have ever been and yet it’s still not possible. I just don’t know HOW to keep the house clean without cleaning all day long if I don’t want to spend hours cleaning. Which is still hours cleaning, btw. Your house is much bigger than mine. So I understand even less how you do it. 😭 I’m failing at adulting.

    • @ClutterbugPod
      @ClutterbugPod 19 годин тому

      You aren't failing, you just aren't in the habit of tidying as you go. I used to put everything down because I didn't have easy homes to put stuff away, and I also wasn't used to putting stuff away. At the end of the day my house would look trashed!!! The secret for me was setting 4 or 5 alarms throughout the day to remind me to do 5 minute tidy ups. It sucked, but it wasn't about keeping things tidy (that was a bonus) it was creating muscle memory so I started putting stuff away without realizing it.

    I totally agree about the little vacuuming robots. I got mine a month ago. A cheap one (130€) that just randomly moves around. No scanning the room or anything. It really is a game changer. Since then: - my floors are always tidy - it finds dust every day - it motivates me to clean/tidy/declutter alongside quite often - it helps getting rid of my perfectionist mindset when it runs past some speck of dirt multiple times. It will get to it at some point, though. - it might not get into every corner, but my flat looks h**l of a lot better 😃

    Yes! 5 and 10 minute increments are huge! I found I get alot done like that. Works great for me. Deep cleaning each room happens 1-2 times a year. Just done that, 1 room a day to deep clean. 6 days. So 6 days 2 times a year to deep clean. Keeping everything put in its place is huge too. That’s right, it’s harder to catch up. Keep up🎉 That’s key! Yes, simplify! I love my cozy home. Keeping up❤

    The thing that takes the most of your time is the preparation before the real cleaning (decluttering, putting things away in the place their supposed to be, dusting, vacuming) you also have to move some things before you can start cleaning surfaces. When you count these things in your cleaning process, it takes a long time. The procrastination is a strange thing. I so hate vacuming that I spend more time thinking about how much I hate it instead of doing it. I love your Psychology about it, timing a few minutes and once you are doing it you want to do more.

    I find fly ladies weekly home blessing hour to be totally possible. I do it once a week nearly every week. It keeps my house cleaner than most for sure. The whole idea is to clean imperfectly and fast. The result of doing it for a year is a spotless house. I run out of things to dust during the alotted time so I wipe down other things like the top of the fridge. I run out of windows to wash so I go outside and hose them off from the outside. It's totally possible. I keep the bathroom clutter free and spend 2 minutes a day on it so that is spotless when I start cleaning my house. Things get remarkably easier the more times you do it in a week.
